According to North East news, the marina provides moorings for vessels up to 40 feet in length, bringing back the days when boats clustered around a busy Newcastle Quayside.
Boats can now book to moor on the pontoons during the day at a cost of £10 for boats up to six metres in length, and £15 for longer vessels.
The pontoons are run by city business group NE1 who will also oversee the trials and train up street rangers to manage the city centre marina.
Managers at NE 1 say they are confident that, with only an hour's sailing from the mouth of the Tyne into the heart of the city, yachtsmen on round-Britain trips will add Newcastle to their itinerary as a new stopping-off point.
Adrian Waddell, director of operations, said: "NE1 received tremendous and widespread support for this plan.
